Obituary of Ellen Ekman

Warner Robins, GA: Ellen Newberry Ekman was born on April 13, 1921, in Lizella, Georgia. She passed away February 1, 2007, at the home of her younger daughter in Warner Robins. She had been suffering from a lingering illness. Ellen lived in Lizella and attended schools in Bibb County until marrying Elmer Ekman on Christmas Day of 1937. At that time, she moved with him to his home in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, but Georgia was always on her mind. Ekman family vacations were always happily spent in Lizella, and family members were always welcome guests at the Ekman home in Florida. Ellen and Elmer lived in Ft. Lauderdale with their two daughters until 1959, when the family moved to West Palm Beach. Ellen continued to live in Florida for several years after her husband’s death in 1992, eventually moving back to Lizella in 1998 to care for her mother, Hazel Newberry. When Mrs. Newberry died in 2002, at the age of 102, Ellen moved to Warner Robins to live with her daughter, Lynda Ekman-Fischer. Ellen was pre-deceased by her husband of 55 years, Elmer, her parents, Floyd and Hazel Newberry of Lizella, and her son-in-law, John G. Fischer. She is survived by two daughters, Lynda Ekman-Fischer of Warner Robins and Karen Ekman-Baur of Ehningen, Germany; her son-in-law, Werner Baur, and grandson, Mark Baur, of Ehningen, Germany; sister, Ruth Smith of Crawford County; two brothers, Morris Newberry of Macon and William Newberry of Lizella; two sisters-in-law, Joyce Newberry of Macon and Pat Cook of Urbana, OH; and a brother-in-law, Bob Cook of Urbana, OH; a number of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews; many cousins; and a ?grandkitty?, B.K. of Warner Robins. Ellen was devoted to her husband and daughters, her parents, and her siblings, and they were equally devoted to her. Her sweet and gentle ways, her calm demeanor, her appreciative spirit, her uncomplaining nature, and her innate wisdom will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved her. Heritage Memorial Funeral Home will be handling the arrangements, with no services being planned. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Heart of Georgia Hospice at 103 Westridge Dr., Warner Robins, Georgia, 31088.
