Obituary of Mable Ellen Hicks Duckworth

Warner Robins, Georgia – Mable Ellen Hicks Duckworth, 88, our sweet mama, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 1, 2022. She passed peacefully surrounded by all of her children. A Funeral Service honoring her life will be held on Friday, January 7, 2022, at 4:00PM, at Heritage Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation with family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service from 3:00PM – 4:00PM. A private interment will be held at Andersonville National Cemetery.

Mable was born on September 12, 1933, in Emanuel County, Georgia, to the late Anna Marie Bridges Hicks and Johnnie Hicks. A proud 1950 graduate of Warner Robins High School, Mable’s favorite color was red, a fact she made sure everyone knew. She was a talented athlete with a competitive spirit and played on the Varsity basketball team where she was named Most Athletic in her senior year. Mable also played on the all-male baseball team in Cochran Field and was chosen to travel with the team, but her daddy would not allow it. So after graduation, Mable lied about her age to get a job at Robins Air Force Base and faithfully served for 36 years as a civilian.

Mable loved life and enjoyed coffee and conversation with her many friends. She had a unique sense of humor and was oftentimes the life of the party. She had a green thumb and a sweet tooth, especially for chocolate. She loved growing flowers in her back yard and going to the occasional yard sale. She had a great eye for collectibles. Mable loved attending live music events and could sometimes be seen dancing at the Powersville Opry where her cousin Claude played. She loved Elvis and was fortunate enough to see him several times live in concert. She was a good dancer and enjoyed being the center of attention, especially when she won Bingo or her many medals in the Senior Olympics. She was also a very involved member of both the Warner Robins and Centerville Senior Citizens Club.

Mable loved her children and was very proud of their talents and accomplishments. She would often tell people that she taught them everything they know. They each thought that they were her favorite. She was a life-long pet owner and always had several dogs, and sometimes cats, which she loved with all her heart. Mable did not like to cook, but she loved to eat. She always managed to find her way to the front of the food line. Mable was a proud to be an American and valued her freedom of speech. She was empathetic of others and was never shy about offering advice. “Bless your heart. You can’t help it, but you could stay at home.”

Mable was everything you would hope for in a mama.

Her parents were awaiting her at the gates of Heaven along with her husband, James Duckworth; and her many siblings: Rubie Usry, Robert Hicks, Iris Swymer, Marie Steele, Roy Hicks, John Ira Hicks, and Doris Purvis. She is survived by one beautiful sister, Helen Norman (Bob).

Also left to cherish her memory are her children: Pam Womack Godfrey, Brian Barnett, Brenda Barnett Hines, Barbara Barnett Pinyan (Scott), Charles Barnett (Georgiana); 8 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren; and her precious puppy Peanut.
